Using the Measuring Worth calculators, find out
  1. How much a $1,600 slave in 1860 would be worth in 2010
  2. Which measure of inflation best represents modern worth? Why?
  3. Using the measure of inflation you selected, multiple your number by 4 million slaves. How much is that worth?
  4. If the American Southeast totals $3.1 trillion today, what percent of the modern economy would slavery make up?
  5. A $20 dollar federal lawsuit (7th Amendment) would be worth in 2010.
  6. General Electric stock originally sold for $108 per share in 1892. If you bought 50 shares, you would pay $5,400. Relatively speaking, would $5,400 be easily affordable today?
    a) if you bought GE stock in 1892, stock splits would put your single share at 4,608 and 50 shares at 230,000. If you bought 50 shares in 1892, and a single share is worth close to $20 today, what is the total worth of the original 50 as compared to the indexes of inflation?
  7. McDonalds stock in 1965 was $22.50. 100 shares would be $2,250. In 2009, what would be the equivalent of $2,250 in 1965.
    a) MCD also split so that 1 share = 1,487.2. 100 shares would then now be a total of 148,720. McDonalds has been hovering between $75-$76 a share this week. How much is $75/share x 148,720? How does that do against what $2,250 in 1965 is worth today. Regardless of the worth, dividends alone for the 100 shares in 1965 would be worth around $362,000 per year.
